From the era of Thomas Jefferson to today, the political, military, economic, and cultural relationship between the United States and Russia has fascinated citizens of both countries.

On January 22, 2008, the Honorable Jack Matlock, former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, joined University of Virginia Professors Peter Onuf and Allen Lynch to examine how the U.S.-Russian relationship continues to evolve. GAGE co-Chair Melvyn Leffler moderated.

The Honorable Jack Matlock is a career Foreign Service Officer. He was a specialist in Soviet Affairs during some of the most tumultuous years of the Cold War, and served as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1987 to 1991. Professor Onuf is the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Professor in the Corcoran Department of History. Professor Lynch is the Hugh S. & Winifred B. Cumming Memorial Chair in International Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics, and the Director of the Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Virginia.

This panel was part of the Virginia Opera's statewide initiative Virginia Celebrates Russia! commemorating the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia.
