Richard R. John, Professor of History at the University of Illinois, is the author of Spreading the News: The American Postal System from Franklin to Morse (1995) and many articles on the history of American public policy, business, and communications. He is also the editor of Ruling Passions: Political Economy in Nineteenth-Century America (2006), a volume of original essay on topics in 19th-century American political history. He is currently completing a history of early American telecommunications.
