Melvin Patrick Ely, Newton Family Professor of History and Black Studies at the College of William & Mary, won the Bancroft Prize in 2004 for Israel on the Appomattox: A Southern Experiment in Black Freedom from the 1790s Through the Civil War. The book follows as many as 150 free black people who lived, worked and mingled with their white neighbors in pre-Civil War Prince Edward County. A book signing will follow the Forum.
