George McGovern, who represented South Dakota in the United States Senate from 1963 to 1981, has served as the United Nations' Global Ambassador on World Hunger since 2001, working closely with former U.S. Senator Bob Dole. From 1961 to 1962 he was director of the Food for Peace program. He flew combat missions in World War II, was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1972, and was U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Agency in Rome, 1998-2001. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.
