Ambassador Laurence Pope, a Middle East expert, served as Gen. Anthony Zinni's political advisor at CENTCOM from 1997 to 2000, and as United States Ambassador to Kuwait beginning in early 2000. A career member of the senior foreign service, Pope hasserved in posts including the Republic of Chad and Bahrain. He was acting coordinator for antiterrorism in the George H. W. Bush State Department.
