William Freehling, a fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, writes about the road to the Civil War. Prelude to Civil War: The Nullification Controversy in South Carolina (1995), was followed by a modern classic, The Road to Disunion: Secessionists at Bay, 1774-1854 (1990). His current research and writing considers President Lincoln's growth in the White House.
