Chester A. Arthur: 1881-1885

James Garfield nominated Chester Arthur as his vice president to appease party leaders that favored the re-nomination of Grant for a third term. However, Arthur ended up succeeding President Garfield, who was shot and died a few months into his term. The National Commission on Choosing and Using Vice Presidents, convened in 1992 and co-chaired by former Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie and former Maryland Senator Charles McC. Mathias, recommended criteria and qualifications for the selection of a vice president.
