Rutherford B. Hayes: 1877-1881
|
Rutherford B. Hayes’s victory in the election of 1876 was decided only after an Electoral Commission was established to rule on disputed electoral college votes in a number of states. The final electoral vote count was 185 to 184, and Hayes eked his way into the White House. The 2001 National Commission on Federal Election Reform, co-chaired by Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, looked at ways to reform the electoral system. |
