William Howard Taft: 1909-1913

William Howard Taft was the only U.S. President who also served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Today, selecting federal judges has become increasingly problematic. In 1996, the National Commission on the Selection of Federal Judges, co-chaired by former Attorney General Nicholas deB. Katzenbach and former Deputy Attorney General Harold R. Tyler, Jr., reviewed the selection process for federal judges and outlined means for streamlining the confirmation process.
