John Tyler: 1841-1845

Vice President John Tyler became President after William Henry Harrison died only a month after taking office. He became the first vice president who assumed the role of President due to the death of the incumbent. The 1992 National Commission on Choosing and Using Vice Presidents, co-chaired by former Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie and the former Maryland Senator Charles McC. Mathias, stressed the importance of choosing vice presidential candidates capable and well-equipped to shoulder the responsibilities of the presidency.
