On January 8, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson delivered the first State of the Union since the assassination of President John Kennedy. In the speech, President Johnson remarked on the American spirit and current political divisions saying, “In these last seven sorrowful weeks, we have learned anew that nothing is so enduring as faith, and nothing is so degrading as hate.” LBJ Library photo by Cecil Stoughton.
