Assassination of President Lincoln

Source: The Library of Congress

On April 14, 1865, five days after the Confederate surrender that ended the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by assassin John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., as seen in this artistic rendering. The President died hours later; his body was carried back to Illinois on a funeral train which allowed thousands of Americans along the route to pay their respects.
