Source: The Library of Congress

In the Mexican War, Franklin Pierce served as a brigadier general, commanding more than two thousand men. He was injured during the Battle of Contreras on August 19, 1847, when his horse stumbled, and Pierce fell off and crushed his leg. The injured Pierce was able to ride again within a month but he arrived too late to participate in decisive victory at the Battle of Chapultepec in September 1847.
