In the 1880 presidential election, the Republican Party nominated James A. Garfield for President and Chester A. Arthur for Vice President. The Republican ticket won in one of the closest elections on record. Garfield beat the Democratic nominee by a mere 7,368 votes. However, he won handily in the Electoral College, where he received 214 votes to his opponent's 155.
