Deathbed of President Abraham Lincoln

Source: The Library of Congress

After being shot by assassin John Wilkes Booth the previous night, President Abraham Lincoln died in the morning of April 15, 1865. Lincoln's death effectively muted Northern jubiliation surrounding the Civil War victory. Ten days later, Booth was discovered by the army and secret service in a rural Virginia barn and died in the ensuing shoot-out.
