Dolley Madison

Source: The Library of Congress

On September 15, 1794, James Madison married twenty-six year old Dolley Payne Todd. Dolley’s vivacious character and unconventional mannerisms contrasted and complimented her husband’s quiet and shy demeanor. Although she was sometime criticized by conservatives, Dolley was a popular and well-like figure among both the American public and Washingtonian politicians.
