End of Buchanan Presidency

Source: National Archives

James Buchanan’s endorsement of a proslavery constitution for Kansas sparked a rift with many of his fellow Democrats who, in turn, did not nominate him for the 1860 presidential election. This split enabled the relatively unknown Republican Abraham Lincoln to win the White House.  Buchanan later wrote a memoir, Mr Buchanan's Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion, which was published in 1866 and largely ignored by the public.
