First Lady Julia Grant

Source: The Library of Congress

Julia Grant took an active role in her husband's bid for the presidency. She was immersed in his campaign and even more involved once the Grants were in the White House. Mrs. Grant enjoyed the traditional hostess duties of First Lady, but also took an interest in her husband's politics, striking an effective balance between the roles that made her well loved by the American people.
