First Lady Rachel Jackson

Source: The Library of Congress

Shortly after moving to Nashville in 1788, Andrew Jackson began courting Rachel Donelson Robards, a married but separated woman from a wealthy local family. In 1791, Robards and Jackson began living as man and wife, until being formally married in 1794 following Rachel's official divorce. During the presidential campaign, opponents exploited Jackson's unconventional past, charging him with bigamy and wife-stealing.
