Reputed as a great intellect of his time, Thomas Jefferson divulged his passion for education into the establishment of the University of Virginia, designing all of its campus buildings, setting up its curriculum, and selecting its faculty. An advocate of free public education, Jefferson sought to create an institution of higher learning that would support and nourish intellectually talented men.
