Source: The Library of Congress

On November 23, 1804, Franklin Pierce was born in Hillsborough (now Hillsboro), New Hampshire. He attended local schools until age twelve when his parents sent him to private academies. At fifteen, he entered Bowdoin College in Maine. In 1829, he was elected to the state legislature, and in 1832, Pierce—not yet thirty years old—was elected to the United States House of Representatives.
