On August 9, 1974, Vice President Gerald R. Ford, left, was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States by Chief Justice Warren Burger, as his wife Betty watched. Ford assumed the presidency after his predecessor, President Richard M. Nixon, resigned as a result of his role in the Watergate scandal. Ford ran for election in his own right in 1976, but was defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter.
