Source: The Library of Congress

Former President Ulysses S. Grant writes his memoirs on his porch in Mount McGregor, New York, on June 27, 1885. Grant decided to write his memoirs to provide financial insurance for his family after he lost most of his money. He completed his book just days before his death from throat cancer on July 23, 1885. The book was a huge literary and financial success.
