Inauguration of President Garfield

Source: The Library of Congress

On March 4, 1881, James Abram Garfield was sworn in as the 20th President of the United States.  Garfield, a Republican, was elected in one of the closest elections in American history, defeating Democrat candidate Winfield Hancock by a mere 7,368 votes. Garfield’s presidency would be short-lived, however, as he was assassinated in September of the same year.
