January 20, 1989

On January 20, 1989, George Herbert Walker Bush took the oath of office to become the 41st President of the United States as his wife, Barbara, and Vice President Dan Quayle, top right, watched. Having served as President Ronald Reagan’s vice president for eight years, Bush campaigned on continuing Reagan’s legacy. The strategy worked, and Bush was elected with 426 electoral votes.
