Jane Pierce

Source: The Library of Congress

Franklin and Jane Pierce were married in 1834. They had three children, none of whom lived into adulthood. Their last surviving child was killed in a train accident witnessed by both parents two months before Pierce's inauguration. Jane Pierce never recovered and lived in the White House as a recluse. She was the most tragic and unhappy First Lady in American history.
