President John F. Kennedy delivers his State of the Union address in the House of Representatives Chamber on January 14, 1963, to an audience including Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, behind left, and Speaker of the House John W. McCormack, behind right. President Kennedy addressed many issues, both foreign and domestic, and ended the speech by observing: “For 175 years we have sailed with those winds at our back, and with the tides of human freedom in our favor. We steer our ship with hope, as Thomas Jefferson said, ‘leaving Fear astern.’”
