Martin Van Buren was born to Dutch parents of limited financial means in 1782 in Kinderhook, New York; he was the first American President not born a British subject. Despite his humble upbringing, Van Buren passed the state bar, opened a law practice in Kinderhook, and advanced in state and local politics.  At the end of his presidency, he returned to his home in Kinderhook.
