Leadership under Washington and Adams

Source: The Library of Congress

Before being elected President, Thomas Jefferson held positions in the administrations of both George Washington and John Adams. From 1789 to 1793, Jefferson served as the first Secretary of State under Washington. After narrowly being defeated in the election of 1797, Jefferson, a Democratic-Republican, served as Adams’s Vice President before defeating Adams in the 1801 election.
