Zachary Taylor was a career soldier, receiving his first commission as an officer in 1808. By 1845, he had gained fame as an Indian fighter in the nation's continuing warfare against Native Americans. He then became a hero in the Mexican War. Taylor's willingness to share the hardships of field duty with his men earned him the affectionate nickname “Old Rough and Ready.”
