Panama Canal Treaty

June 16, 1978
Source: National Archives

On June 16, 1978, President Jimmy Carter, standing left, and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos, standing right, signed the Panama Canal Treaty. The treaty provided that, as of December 31, 1999, Panama would take over control of the canal and be fully responsible for its operation and defense. A majority of Americans disagreed with this and attacked Carter for “giving away” the canal.
