May 31, 1920
Source: The Library of Congress

President Woodrow Wilson and First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson married on December 18, 1915, more than a year after Wilson's first wife, Ellen Louise Wilson, died. After President Wilson suffered a massive stroke in October 1919, Edith assumed the role of his secretary and gained significant power in the White House, limiting who could see the President and what issues could be discussed in front of him.
