May 27, 1954
Source: National Archives

President Dwight Eisenhower posed with First Lady, Mary “Mamie” Geneva Doud, outside the White House on May 27, 1954. Mamie Eisenhower was seen as a quintessential 1950's First Lady, known for her graciousness and devotion to her family. The First Lady often described the division of labor in the White House in this way: “Ike runs the country, I turn the lamb chops.”
