President Andrew Johnson

November 30, 1869
Source: The Library of Congress

Taking office in April 1865 after President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson is viewed by many historians as extending the period of national strife rather than healing the wounds of war. He was unable to forge a compromise between Radical Republicans and moderates during Reconstruction, and he obstructed political and civil rights for newly freed slaves in the South.
