President Benjamin Harrison

In the presidential election of 1888, the Republican Party nominated Benjamin Harrison. He defeated incumbent President Grover Cleveland. In office, President Harrison was very active in international affairs; he convened the first Pan-American Conference, negotiated an American protectorate over the Samoan Islands, attempted to annex Hawaii, and continued modernizing and expanding the United States Navy.
