November 21, 1989
Source: National Archives

West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, right, presented President George H. W. Bush with a piece of the Berlin Wall in the Oval Office on November 21, 1989.  Earlier that month, Communist East Germany opened its borders, and Germans tore down the Wall.  This event was the symbolic end of the decades-long Cold War and Communist rule in East Europe.
