January 25, 1953

Before being elected to the presidency, Dwight D. Eisenhower earned great distinction for his military service in World War II and the Korean War. In 1952, Eisenhower declared his Republican political affiliation and ran for President with Richard Nixon as his running mate. Eisenhower easily won the election with 442 electoral votes to Democrat opponent Adlai Stevenson’s 89; Eisenhower would defeat Stevenson again four years later.
