President of South Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem, front left, arrived in Washington, D.C., on May 8, 1957, and was greeted by President Dwight Eisenhower, front right, and other U.S. dignitaries, including Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, behind center. Beginning in 1954, President Eisenhower pledged U.S. aid to establishing a non-Communist government in South Vietnam.
