After serving in France in World War I, Harry Truman returned to his home state of Missouri where he was elected to local offices and, eventually, to the United States Senate. In 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt selected Truman as his running mate.  Roosevelt died just 82 days after Truman took office as vice president, and Truman became the 33rd President of the United States.
