President Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924 in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing. He distinguished himself as a student and later attended the United States Naval Academy. After his military service, Carter returned home to run his family’s peanut farm. In Georgia, he served two terms in the state senate and was elected governor in 1970.
