On January 20, 1969, President Lyndon B. Johnson, left, shakes hands with President-elect Richard M. Nixon. During the 1968 elections, the Republican campaign under Nixon was far more organized and unified than the Democratic campaign under Hubert Humphrey. Nixon campaigned with a message for change that included opening U.S. relations with China and the Soviet Union.
