President Johnson Decorates a Soldier

October 26, 1966
Source: Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum

In October 1966, President Lyndon Johnson decorated First Lieutenant Marty Hammer with the Distinguished Service Cross while in Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam. The next month, the Democrats-Johnson's party-lost a significant number of seats in Congress due largely in part to public opposition to the war. LBJ Library photo by Yoichi R. Okamoto.
