President Johnson’s Senate Trial

Source: The Library of Congress

President Andrew Johnson's efforts to slow Reconstruction clashed sharply with the views of Republicans in Congress. The U.S. House of Representatives impeached him on a technically. However, the Senate failed to convict Johnson by one vote, and he remained in office for the rest of his term as President. He was the first President in U.S. history ever to be impeached.
