October 23, 1962
Source: National Archives

On October 23, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed the Cuba Quarantine Proclamation in the Oval Office. The quarantine, or blockade, was a response to the Soviet Union placing long-range nuclear missiles in Cuba. It was ultimately successful, and within a few days Kennedy and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev began negotiations that ended the Cuban Missile Crisis and the imminent possibility of a global nuclear war.
