President McKinley and His Cabinet

Source: The Library of Congress

President William McKinley, far left, sits with his cabinet. Much of the McKinley administration's tenure was consumed by the issue of Spanish rule in Cuba. In 1895, Cubans had revolted against repressive Spanish rule. McKinley wanted an end to the Cuban-Spanish conflict but demanded that Spain act responsibly and humanely and that any settlement be acceptable to Cuban nationals.
