President Millard Fillmore

Source: The Library of Congress

Vice President Millard Fillmore became the thirteenth President of the United States when President Zachary Taylor died on July 9, 1850. Fillmore strongly supported the Compromise of 1850, which tried to resolve the volatile issue of slavery but did not succeed in satisfying either the proslavery or antislavery factions. Fillmore was the last President from the Whig Party.
