President Nixon Campaigning

October 22, 1968
Source: National Archives

While campaigning for President in 1968, Richard Nixon rode alongside his wife, Pat, in a parade.  Nixon won the Republican nomination on the first ballot and began the race with a comfortable lead over Democrat Hubert Humphrey.  As the race progressed, however, Nixon’s lead diminished, and he was ultimately elected by only a one-percent margin in the popular vote.
