President Nixon on Phone

July 21, 1969
Source: National Archives

On July 21, 1969, President Richard Nixon talks to astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong as they make their historic landing on the Moon. The goal to reach the Moon by the end of the 1960s was a vision of President John F. Kennedy. Under President Nixon, however, the space program was not a priority, and the budget for NASA was greatly reduced.
