President Nixon Visits Vietnam

Upon taking office in 1969, President Richard Nixon publicly announced his wish to end the Vietnam War. The President arranged for secret negotiations between National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and the North Vietnamese to discuss American withdrawal. Nixon also pursued “Vietnamization,” the term he coined to label the process of replacing American troops in Vietnam with American-trained Vietnamese troops.
