Before enetering national politics, Theodore Roosevelt served as governor of New York. In this capacity, Roosevelt pursued progressive policies that often strayed from the Republican Party platform. His independence compelled Republican leaders to nominate Roosevelt for the vice presidency under William McKinley, believing that in this position he would be unable to continue his progressive agenda.
